It can be hard to admit that it’s not the networking event that gets you the clients, but what you do afterwards. If you’ve ever left a networking event buzzing with ideas, full of conversations, and quietly confident that something good will come of this, only to be met with crickets, you’re not alone!
This is where so much potential business quietly slips through the cracks because you’ve been telling yourself for years that networking will fix everything. If you show up to an event and speak to three people, the clients will fall in your lap. Sorry to disappoint you, but that’s not the best strategy.
As a member of the Great Women in Business community, we know you’re not short on expertise.
You’re skilled, experienced, know your craft inside out, and you’ve invested in courses, qualifications, coaching, and lived experience. On paper, you’re more than ready, but knowledge alone doesn’t convert into clients. Visibility plus intentional follow-up does.
The Easy Bit: Planning the Networking
Most women are actually very good at the planning side of business networking.
You choose the right events, show up consistently, create the perfect pitch, and have lots of meaningful conversations. LinkedIn profiles are exchanged, and you head off with good intentions. You follow the ‘rules’ perfectly.
- Connect
- Listen
- Support
But there’s that little voice in the back of your head also saying, ‘I’ll follow up with them later.’
Be honest. Have you always done the follow-up, or does it fall off your priority list?
The Harder Bit: The Follow-Up (btw, that’s the bit that makes the money!)
This is where the gap appears, and it’s not because you don’t care. It’s not even that you’re disorganised. It’s more likely that your follow-up remains a ‘must do’ on your list because it feels:
- Awkward
- Salesy
- Easy to overthink
- Easy to postpone
Does that resonate? If so, the message probably stays unsent. After spending hours building a new relationship, that LinkedIn connection goes cold, and any potential collaboration fades. In simple terms, the business goes to someone else.
What Happens When You Don’t Follow Up
This is the uncomfortable part, but it matters, so stick with us. When you don’t follow up:
- People forget what you do
- Momentum disappears
- Trust isn’t built
- Opportunities quietly move on
None of this happens because you weren’t good enough, but because someone else stayed front of mind.
Follow-up doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Try this simple tip instead:
Send a message within 48 hours and reference a specific topic you discussed. Keep it human (not salesy). Focus on connection first and opportunity second. Something like, “I loved chatting about XYZ, would love to stay connected.”
It’s quick and easy, but it can open doors months later.
Why Staying Visible Matters More Than Being Loud
How many conversations do you have with your clients before they sign on the dotted line? It’s unusual for this to happen after one conversation.
Clients come from:
- Repeated touchpoints
- Familiar names
- Trusted voices
- People who show up consistently
Community platforms and trusted local publications also play an important role in business growth. Someone who understands the value of consistent visibility is Sarah Cheney, founder of The Warwickshire Review and our Connections Zone Sponsor.

One powerful way to stay visible without constantly shouting about yourself is through strategic exposure, and Sarah understands this beautifully.
The Warwickshire Review champions local businesses, stories, and voices, helping entrepreneurs stay front of mind in a way that feels credible, community-led, and genuinely supportive.
It’s about being seen, recognised, and remembered, and that’s exactly where clients come from.
